Recent work is explained that establishes a very close relationship between Yang-Mills theory and Double Field Theory via a double copy construction that is inspired by techniques from scattering amplitudes. In contrast to the origin in scattering amplitudes, this double copy construction is off-shell and gauge invariant, using techniques of higher algebras such as homotopy Lie algebras.
