Thermal properties of active and driven systems can be captured in the excess heat, the dissipated heat due entirely to the quasistatic transformation between nonequilibrium conditions.  We discuss the main features of resulting heat capacities for nonequilibrium models.  In particular, we discuss the Nernst heat theorem (extended Third Law) for irreversible Markov jump processes, and we highlight ``anomalies" in their low-temperature heat capacity.
