A thermodynamic approach to mesoscopic complexity far from equilibrium

Nonequilibrium physics is ubiquitous in Nature. Both living matter and modern technology rely on nonequilibrium conditions to perform energy transduction and information processing. In my talk I will try to classify nonequilibrium states on the basis of their thermodynamics and point out some emergent, unexplored features of large systems maintained out of equilibrium by continuous currents.
