A direction energy approach to elastica and elastic flow

I will present the direction energy method, a modification of the elastic energy that yields the same elastica and elastic flow while allowing finite energy for infinite-length curves. This enables a variational approach to infinite-length problems and provides results on uniqueness of elastica and global behavior of the flow. This talk is based on joint work with Glen Wheeler and with Fabian Rupp.
