The geometric origin of the energy-momentum tensor improvement terms

We revisit the problem of constructing an improved conserved energy-momentum tensor which is symmetric or traceless, corresponding to local Lorentz or scale transformations.  Using metric affine gravity we realize these improvement terms as variations with respect to the affine connection. The method is illustrated in various known examples.
