Carroll Strings and Black Holes

Jelle Hartong (U of Edinburgh)

Apr 05. 2024, 10:00 — 10:30

Starting from a phase space Lagrangian of a bosonic string, I will discuss its Carroll expansion by expanding around c=0. There are two options as usual, an electric and a magnetic Carroll string. The magnetic one can also be obtained from an expansion of the Polyakov action whilst the electric one has a Carrollian worldsheet. In the second part of the talk I will show that relativistic strings close to the horizon of a 4D Schwarzschild black hole (as viewed by a stationary observer at infinity) also fall into two classes and that these match with electric and magnetic Carroll strings on 2D Rindler times a 2-sphere.
