The dynamics of oceanic vortices

Xavier Carton (U Brest)

May 22. 2023, 11:30 — 12:15

Using observations from several experiments at sea (SEMANE in the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean, PHYSINDIEN in the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf, EUREC4A north of Brazil), we will discuss the dynamics of mesoscale vortices, and their connections:

- on the one hand with regional currents, which can be limbs of the general circulation of the ocean

- on the other hand with submesoscale structures such as filaments, fronts and small vortex lenses

We will also use realistic ocean model results to support this analysis and the discussion of fundamental processes which underlie the observed vortex evolutions.

In the context of the conference, we will also devote attention to vortex compounds in the Earth oceans compared with other planets atmospheres.
