The workshop will bring together researchers interested in various aspects of the Golod-Shafarevich theory and rank gradient, including group-theorists, number-theorists and ring-theorists. In recent years there has been some interaction between these areas but still many mathematicians working in different fields may be unaware of their common interest in these problems. The workshop aims to present a unified view on the subject, which should stimulate an exchange of ideas and promote collaboration between the participants.
