Statutes of the ESI Medal

  1. The Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics (ESI) at the University of Vienna has established the Medal of the Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics.
  2. The award recognizes outstanding achievements in any area of mathematics or physics, including contributions at the interface of the two fields.
  3. The ESI Medal is awarded annually.
  4. No strict alternation between mathematics and physics is required. In the long term, the ESI Medals should be distributed evenly between the two fields.
  5. The ESI Medal should ordinarily be awarded to one person, but in special circumstances, it may be shared (if the recipients have contributed to the same achievements).
  6. There is no restriction on the age of ESI Medal recipients.
  7. Emphasis is generally given to recent achievements obtained no more than ten years before the nomination deadline.
  8. The ESI Medal will be presented in a ceremony at the ESI, in which the recipients will give a lecture on their work. The ceremony is part of a small symposium centered around the research field of the recipients.
  9. The recipient will receive a medal, certificate, and monetary award to be determined by the Kollegium of the ESI. The recipient will also receive an allowance for travel to the award ceremony.
  10. Nominations for the ESI Medal can be made by organizers of current and previous ESI Thematic Programmes, current and former ESI Senior Research Fellows, former members of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the ESI, former recipients of the ESI Medal, former Directors of the ESI and the President of the ESI Association.
  11. Nominations remain active for three years. Additional and updated materials may be submitted in years 2 and 3 after the original nomination.
  12. Self-nominations are not accepted.
  13. Nominations must include:
    • A nomination letter of no more than 5,000 characters (including spaces) describing the nominees’ achievements to be recognized. The nomination letter must also include the nominees’ names, institutions and contact information.
    • A suggested citation of no more than 500 characters (including spaces) summarizing the nominees’ achievements to be recognized.
    • A biographical sketch of the nominees including a list of up to ten of their most significant publications.
    • Preprints or reprints of up to five of the nominees’ papers.
  14. The selection committee consists of the ESI SAB.
  15. If the selection committee fails to reach a consensus on the recipient of the ESI Medal, a decision will be reached using the instant run-off voting method via secret ballot. If the outcome is a draw, the ESI Director will cast a vote to break the tie. The selection committee may decide by simple majority not to award the ESI Medal in any particular year.
  16. These statutes come into effect on September 1st , 2019.
