Accessing your account remotely with SSH

Please note that for the security of our system and your personal data we do not allow unencrypted connections to our computer system from the internet! Moreover, the only computer accessible from outside the ESI is keen.esi.ac.at.

In particular you will not be able to use telnet or ftp to connect to your account. Hence, in order to connect remotely you can only use secure shell respectively secure ftp. It works like telnet/ftp with the only difference that the entire connection is encrypted so that sensitive information (e.g., your password) cannot be intercepted by hackers.

The fingerprints of our rsa and dsa public keys are:

rsa 1024 f4:c1:62:e7:e9:90:db:7d:23:65:f6:5f:92:b1:9e:56
dsa 1024 73:4c:61:f2:c9:95:ac:af:31:48:4c:f7:28:a4:65:87

Free secure shell clients are available for virtually all operating systems.

  • Linux: OpenSSH is part of all major distributions.
  • Macintosh: OpenSSH is part of MacOS X. In addition, there is a graphical sftp client Fugu. Free clients for Mac OS 9 and older are at macssh.com.
  • Windows: Try e.g. PuTTY.
Note that it might not be legal to use these programs in certain countries.
