Some practical information for visitors of the ESI
[printable version]
Public transport is convenient and safe. Trams and underground trains
generally run until about midnight: first and last trains are listed
at each stop. There are also night buses on some routes, but they
follow different rules.
Inside each bus, underground or tram carriage there is a list of all
the stops on that line. All stops are signposted (at bus and tram
stops at the top of the stop sign). Free subway maps are available at
information offices. Ticket vending machines take € 10 bills
but it is advisable to have some small change with you. 'Zone 1'
covers all of Vienna; the other zones apply to lines to nearby towns,
or to Vienna Airport. In particular, if you buy a single ticket (=
Einzelfahrkarte) at a vending machine you should press yellow button
no. 1 under the 'Einzelfahrkarte' table for adults.
The following tickets are available at vending machines (at every subway
station), tobacconists, or ticket offices at railway stations.
Single tickets are also available (slightely more expensive) inside each
tram or bus.
- Single tickets for € 1.80 (€ 2.20 inside a tram or bus).
Each single ticket allows travel for one person
on a single journey in one direction, and
allows any number of
transfers between buses, trams and
underground trains. The ticket should be
stamped once
at the beginning of the journey at a blue `Entwerter'
machine
found at the entrance to underground stations
and in buses or trams.
- 8-day strip ticket for € 28.80 for a total of 8 (not necessarily
consecutive) days of travel (at a vending machine press the
green button `U' to obtain such a ticket). One of
the eight strips has to be stamped at an Entwerter for
each day used, at the beginning of the first journey of
that day. After that you just have to carry the ticket
with you.
These tickets can also be used for several persons travelling together,
provided that one field is stamped for each person once for each day,
- Weekly tickets for € 14, valid from Monday to Sunday,
and monthly tickets for € 49.50, valid for a calendar month. These are
available from ticket offices and tobacconists. These tickets are
transferable, but if n people travel together, you must be able to
produce n tickets!
Transportation from the airport to the hotel and to Bahnhof Landstrasse
Taxis from the airport to Vienna are expensive, unless
preordered, e.g., from C&K Airportservice or Airportexpress
(around € 30).
If you prefer public transportation, you can either take the
CAT train (€ 8) to
Bahnhof Landstrasse and continue from there (see below) or use
the regular train S7 in direction "Floridsdorf", get out at stop "Handelskai",
change to S45 in direction "Hütteldorf" and get out at the stop "Oberdöbling". The Hotel is just two minutes walking distance from the stop, just turn left at the exit. For this trip, you need a 2 zone (€ 3.60) ticket which will also cover the subway/tram within Vienna. S7 leaves from the airport every 30 min.; tickets are available from a vending machine on the platform from which the train leaves.
(A) Getting to the hotel from Bahnhof Landstrasse
From Bahnhof Landstrasse you can either take a taxi to the hotel
(about € 18), or continue by public transport: take the underground
line U-4 in the direction 'Heiligenstadt'. At the second stop
(Schottenring) change to underground line U-2 (unique direction). At
the first stop (Schottentor) change to tram Nr. 38 (direction
'Grinzing'), and get out many stops later at 'Sieveringer
Strasse'. The hotel is at the beginning of Sieveringer Strasse. Total
travel time around 40 minutes.
(B) Getting to the hotel from Westbahnhof
Taxis from Westbahnhof to the hotel are around € 15. Otherwise take
tram Nr. 5 (direction 'Praterstern'), and get out at
'Währingerstrasse/Spitalgasse' many stops later. Change into tram
Nr. 38, direction Grinzing, and continue as in (A). Total travel time
around 45 minutes.
(C) Getting to the hotel from Südbahnhof
Taxis from Südbahnhof to the hotel are
around € 17. Otherwise take the tram D (direction 'Nussdorf'), and
get out at 'Schottentor/Universität' many stops later. Change
into tram Nr. 38, direction Grinzing, and continue as in (A). Total
travel time around 45 minutes.
Getting to the Institute
[street map]
Travelling either on tram Nr. 5 (cf. (B)) or Nr. 38 (cf. (A) and (C)),
get out at 'Währingerstrasse/Spitalgasse'. From the hotel take
the tram Nr. 38 into town (Schottentor), and again get out at
'Währingerstrasse/Spitalgasse'.
From the stop Währingerstrasse/Spitalgasse walk along
Währingerstrasse (left of the park) towards the city centre up to
Strudlhofgasse, continue along Strudlhofgasse up to the next
corner. There turn left into Boltzmanngasse and walk to number 9.
Inside the building, go up two floors, turn to the right and
you are standing in front of the ESI.
The secretary is the third door to the right.
Getting from the ESI to the Faculties of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Vienna
The Faculty of Physics
is just around the corner in Boltzmanngasse 5.
The Faculty of Mathematics in Nordbergstrasse 15
(UZA 4) is a 15 minutes
walk: Go down Boltzmanngasse until the end where you will hit Alserbachstrasse.
Turn right and follow it until you reach Julius-Tandler-Platz. Turn left
and follow Althanstrasse until the first turn. At the right there is
a stairway (next to the post office) which will lead you to UZA 4.
