The main server keen.esi.ac.at (aka www.esi.ac.at, ftp.esi.ac.at, email.esi.ac.at) is the central part of the ESI computer system. It takes care about all mail transport from and to hosts outside the ESI. It is the only computer which accepts connections from outside the ESI! All the user data are stored on the main server. Also, all the FTP and WWW data acessible from outside the ESI are stored on that computer. The main server cannot be acessed directly (via a keyboard) by users. The only way to login on it is via secure shell. So from any workstation you can log into the main server by issuing the command "ssh keen". In particular, this is the only way to connect to the ESI sytem from outside the ESI. Due to the central importance of this server for the ESI system and the fact that slowing down this server will affect all users, you should generally not work on keen during your stay at the ESI. In particular, processes which consume lots of resources should not be started on keen. The main exception to this rule is if you have problems with some command on a workstation (say with printing a file), then you can try to ssh to keen and try it there. If it works there, please inform the system administration (root@esi.ac.at) about the problem, so that we can fix it on that workstation. From the point of view of available software, etc. the main server behaves like any other UNIX workstation. Please mail comments about this page to www-admin@esi.ac.at. |
