The ESI computer system
This page contains basic information on using the computer system at the
Erwin Schrödinger Institute. Please read this information carefully.
All guests have access to twenty workstations most of which are located in the corridor in
front of the guest's offices. In addition, it is possible to
hook up your
own laptop to the ESI network.
Important things you should know:
- All workstations run Scientific Linux and you need an account
(user name and password) in order to use them. You will get your account upon arrival
from our secretaries. Note that your account will be disabled after you have left the ESI!
The expiry date for your account is indicated on the sheet you get after your account is created.
- While we make regular backups of all user data, it is highly recommended
to backup important data, in particular files that you change frequently. There are two simple
ways to make backups:
Either you copy the data to some other computer on the internet that you have
an access to (via FTP or sftp), or you copy the relevant files to removable media
(e.g., floppy disks).
- From outside the ESI you can only connect to the main server
(keen.esi.ac.at) using secure shell.
- Viruses/SPAM We try to protect our users against spam. Hence all
incoming emails are automatically filtered and, those tagged as spam are
rejected by our server. In addition, even though our Linux system is
immune against Windows viruses, we also scan incoming mail for viruses
and all mails containing a virus are discarded by our server.
- Webmail: You can read your email on your ESI account from anywhere in the world using the following URL:
https://www.esi.ac.at/webmail/
- To forward your email to another address, simply create a file
~/.forward containing the email address to which your mail
should be forwarded. E.g., at the shell prompt type
echo your.name@your.university.edu > ~/.forward (this
will work on other unix systems as well).
- All the ESI computers use the same laser printer shredder at
the end of the main corridor (not the corridor with the computers), so
whenever you issue a printing command on one of the computers the output
will (hopefully) appear there. There is also the option to make two-sided
printouts, which are automatically stapled on the copier. To get such a
printout choose copynix as printer (on the command line use
lpr -Pcopynix instead of lpr) and be aware
of the fact that your printout will be in the copier rather than the
laser printer.
- If you transfer Windows (DOS) or Macintosh (including Mac OS X) files to an ESI workstation, you
have to be aware of problems with filenames
and the necessity to
convert
text files (for example TeX-source files) between UNIX and Windows/Macintosh format.
