ESI Computer System

This page contains basic information on using the computer system at the Erwin Schrödinger Institute. Please read this information carefully.

The ESI Workstations

All guests have access to ten workstations most of which are located in the corridor in front of the guest's offices. All workstations can be used with one shared account in order to access the internet (the username is guest and the password is available at the ESI).

Since this account is shared by all guests, we strongly recommend that you do not store any personal data and turn on private browsing in firefox. Moreover, no backup of the data in this account will be made!

In case you need to store personal data the simplest way to do so is by using a USB drive.

Using your own Laptop at the ESI

You can connect to the internet via network cable or WiFi/WLAN. If your institution participates in the eduroam project, you should be able to use the WiFi account from your home institution. Otherwise, both cable and WiFi access require a temporary u:account (login & password) issued by the ESI admin office. This account can be used to connect to the eduroam wireless network, or to u:connect-wired via ethernet cable in the offices (see u:connect-wired for more information). Instructions on setting up eduroam are available at the ZID homepage.

To print from the main printer called copynix which is located at the end of the corridor follow these instructions:

For Windows:

  • In the “System Preferences” select “Devices and Printers”.
  • Click on “Add printer” and select “Add a network, or Bluetooth printer”.
  • Click on “The printer that I want isn’t listed”.
  • Check “Select a shared printer by name” and enter: http://printer.mat.univie.ac.at:631/printers/copynix
  • In the next step, select the printer “Canon iR5055/5065” from the list
  • In case this printer does not appear in the list, you need to install the driver first. If possible always use a PS (postscript) or “universal” driver. Alternatively, install the printer driver Canon iR5000i-6000i (via internet or borrow the software on a USB stick from the ESI admin office). Then click on “I have a disk” and open the folder where you downloaded the printer driver to.
  • Now you have to decide if you want this printer as your default printer.

Note: For Windows XP, please choose “local printer” at the beginning of the installation process and only later “Standard TCP/IP Port”.

For Linux:

  • Open a web browser (Firefox, Chrome…) and go to the site http://localhost:631. You will see the welcome screen of the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS).
  • In the web site’s menu bar, click on “Administration”, then - under “Printers” - on “Add printer”.
  • You will be prompted to enter your user name and password.
  • After successful authorization, choose “Internet Printing Protocol (http)” from the “Other Network Printers” section and click on “Continue”.
  • Now, under “Connection:”, enter http://printer.mat.univie.ac.at:631/printers/copynix
  • On the next screen, enter the printer’s name (copynix) and, optionally, a description and location (e.g. ESI). Click on “Continue”.
  • From the list, choose “Generic” as make and then “Generic Postscript Printer” as model. Click on “Add Printer”.
  • On the next screen, you may configure the printer’s options. Usually, the defaults are acceptable. Just make sure that, under “General”, the “Media Size” is set to “A4” and under ”Options Installed“ the Duplexer Unit is installed.
  • Click “Set Default Options”.

For Mac:

  • Go to "System preferences" --> Print & Fax/Print & Scan “+” to add new printer
  • In new window, click on “IP” and enter:

Protocol: Internet printing protocol – IPP
Printer Address: printer.mat.univie.ac.at
Printer Queue: printers/copynix
Name: copynix
Location: ESI
Print using: Generic Postscript Printer

  • On the next page, check the “Duplex Printing Unit” box
