Summer School: Between Geometry and Relativity

The school will take place on July 17 - 21, 2017. The lectures will be held in the Lise Meitner lecture hall of the Faculty of Physics, Boltzmanngasse 5. The school is part is part of the special programme "Geometry and Relativity" at the Erwin Schrödinger Institute (ESI) in Vienna. It is aimed at doctoral students and young researchers. Its goal is to present the latest developments in the field to younger colleagues and to researchers participating in the program and wishing to expand their research perspective. The school will also serve as a stepping stone for younger colleagues who wish to attend the conference.

We plan 7 lecture series given by Bizouard, Corvino, Eichmair with Huang, Fajman, Galloway, Gillessen and Schoen. Please note that Hans Ringstroem will not be able to lecture, as originally planned. His lectures will be replaced by lectures by David Fajman on the same topic (the exact number of lectures remains to be determined). Furthermore, in order to reflect new important developments in the field, there will be four hours of introductory lectures on the positive energy theorems by Michael Eichmair and Lan Huang. Richard Schoen will now give a six hours course on the higher dimensional positive energy theorem. In view of the above changes in the program, the tutorials originally planned will not take place. A ``reader" of lecture notes will be made available in due time.

A prerequisite is some grounding in differential geometry and general relativity.

The selection of the participants has already been made. Further applications will only be considered in exceptional cases.

We are grateful to the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the Erwin Schrödinger Institute, the European Mathematical Society, the International Association of Mathematical Physics, the Journal of Mathematical Physics and the Vienna Doctoral School for financial support.

We are hoping for a positive outcome of an application to the NSF for a travel grant for US participants.
