Discussions and work on Conformal Vertex Algebras and their Applications
will be led by Victor Kac (MIT) who is going to spend at ESI the entire
month of September. The topic is expected to relate to both parts of the
programme: it gives rise to quantum field theory models and involves applications
of integral lattices and quadratic forms. In particular, Jürg Fröhlich
(ETH, Zürich) and Andrea Cappelli (INFN, Florence) are expected to
lead during the first half of September discussions on the applications
of current and W-algebras to the quantum Hall effect.
Participants: B. Bakalov (MIT), A. Coste (Orsay), T. Gannon (North
York, Canada), P. Ruelle (Louvain La Neuve, Belgium)

During the second half of September Alain Connes (Collège de France
and IHES) will lead a group of mathematicians and mathematical physicists
working on different aspects of the title problem. A central event in this
part of the programme will be a one week Conference
on the Riemann Zeta Function, which is sponsored by the ESI and the
American
Institute of Mathematics, starting September 20,1998 (arrival date).
The talks at the Conference will be by invitation only; attendance, on
the other hand, may be only restricted by the size of the lecture room.
It is expected that most of the invited speakers will remain at ESI for
one more week (either before or after the conference) to be able to interact
more closely with interested mathematicians and mathematical physicists
in Vienna during this period.
Participants (apart from the invited speakers of the conference):
M. Balazard (Bordeaux), D.G. Broadhurst (Milton Keynes), P. Cohen
(Lille), D. Kreimer (Meinz), M.L. Lapidus (Univ. Cal., Riverside),
E. Leichtnam (ENS, Paris), J. Martinet (Bordeaux), N. Snaith
(Bristol), M. Wolf (Wroclaw), Xian-Jin Li (Austin, Texas)
