Time: September 1 - December 31, 1996

Key words to the main topics of the program are:

• ergodicity (local and global, conservative and dissipative billiards)
• correlation decay
• integrable and non integrable behaviour in hamiltonian systems (one dimensional models: F.P.U.; Wigner; ...)
• equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics (hard ball systems and their phase transitions, coupled map lattices, general distribution for stationary states and chaoticity, driven and damped Lorentz gas)

The aim is to bring together experts on topics of current interest, both mathematicians and physicists who, in the informal and convivial atmosphere of the ESI in Vienna, would conduct individual or joint research, and would make efforts to understand and improve on some deep methods recently proposed in the field of interest.

The semester is concentrated to two four week periods:

• Session A running from September 1 to September 28
• Session B running from November 24 to December 21.

A new feature of the ESI programs is to welcome the participation of self-supported junior researchers. According to this recommendation we encourage you to try to find the appropriate financial support for your students or collaborators. Due to a planned increase in office space, the Institute should be able to accomodate this new category of participants (almost certainly for Section A, certainly for Section B). (However, the budget of our semester being tight, we have, unfortunately, no reserves for further invitations.)
